"This exercise taught me so much. Take at peek into what I noticed about me when my first map, was complete.
Get up close and personal as I reveal the depths of my pain and the wisdom that was birthed in the process.
Hugz, Q! |
|
When I created my first map, I was shocked, amazed, and saddened. But most importantly, I was enlightened.
My map revealed the depths of my pain and loneliness. Although you would think it may have been hard to face, surprisingly it wasn't. In a way, it was liberating.
I could finally put my finger on what was most distressing me and then I could take the necessary steps to improve my life.
My second map had a completely different feel. It was empowering! And it reminded me of the 'ME' that was being held hostage by all of my DRAMA.

Not ready to surrender those magazines ?
Get over it - They are just magazines!
I used to think that it was sacrilegious to tear out pages or cut up an Essence or an O Magazine. I thought those were collectors items that need not be disturbed.
Don't be like me! Let this be an opportunity for those magazines, that you already love, to support you (in a tangible way) in achieving and becoming the greatest you yet!
Ok, Let's get started
Set aside about 2 hours. It may take less time...it may take more.
( Attn: Scrapbookers. This is not an exercise in embellishment. Resist the urge to decorate your boards. I know it's hard. But you can do it.:) |
| |
Goal |
Find words, pictures, images, phrases, or captions that grab your attention. Everything in the magazines is fair game, even the ads. |
|
|
Step 1
Set the atmosphere
|
Turn on music that helps you to focus. For me it's nature sounds or spa type music. (I need music that doesn't stimulate me too much. I already have my thoughts to stimulate me so music with lyrics could distract me.) Try it.
Get into the right frame of mind
Find yourself in the pages...find your pain in the pages - find your joy in the pages.
No talking please...it's time to focus. |
| |
Step 2
Make 2 Piles |
Prepare to make 2 separate piles:
|
Pile 1 for Today (2007 & Before)
Pile 2 for Tomorrow (2008 & Beyond) | |
| |
Step 3
Tear the pages
Don't analyze it!
| Don't try to figure out why you're drawn to it! Just tear out the pages and put them in the appropriate pile. |
|
No talking - just tearing!
Move quickly through this step. As the pages grab your attention, tear them out by the seam.
Ask yourself throughout this process is:
"Does this image, text, caption apply to today? or tomorrow?" Put each page in its appropriate pile.
Don't be surprised if you have a lot of pages torn out...just keep tearing! Flip through all of your magazines until you reach the end. |
| |
Step 4
Create your TODAY Map
2007 and Before |
Now grab the stack for '2007 and Before' and cut out the image, text, phrase, caption or what ever grabbed your attention.
NOTE: Be sure to check both sides of the page before you cut. There may be a message or image on the back as well.
Next, using your glue stick affix each image, word, etc. onto the poster board wherever you see fit.
Continue this process until you have gone through all of the pages that you removed from the magazines.
When you are finished with the Today Map - DON'T Analyze it...go on to the '2008 and Beyond' stack. Trust me...it will go pretty fast. |
| |
Step 5
Create your TOMORROW Map
2008 and Beyond |
Grab the 2008 stack and start cutting out the text/images. Continue the same process that you did on your first map.
Remember : Check both sides of your pages before you cut. There may be a message or image on the back as well. |
| |
Step 6
Now it's time to analyze your Maps
|
Now that both of your maps are complete, Grab your journal and both of your maps and let's take a peek at what you did.
Stop and take a long look at your 2007 map. Before I pose a few questions for you, I'd like for you to write down your thoughts, feelings and insights.
Whatever emotions come up for you, allow them to just be. Don't be afraid to feel. This is a big part of the journey and you don't want to miss out on what's to come because of fear. If there are tears...let them flow.
Keep in mind that the 2007 map is from your past: it's where you've been and it's who you were.
The 2008 map will be more of a reflection of who you are (at heart) and who you are becoming. |
| |
When you're ready, take some time to answer the following questions in your journal.
Let's start with the 2007 and Before Map.
